How do you compare GLP-1 medications in Canada?
Separate four questions: the exact authorized product and labelled use, the pharmacy’s current supply, the complete ongoing cost, and your own public or private coverage. BC, Ontario and Alberta use different benefit programmes. Use this overview for the access-and-budget checklist, and the separate brand comparison to prepare product questions for your practitioner.

The names you will encounter
Health Canada’s GLP-1 product advisory identifies semaglutide names including Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy, and tirzepatide names including Mounjaro and Zepbound. They are prescription products; their names are not a menu from which to choose a medicine without a practitioner.
| Ingredient or group | Names you may see | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide | Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus | The exact formulation, labelled use, strength, quantity and DIN. |
| Tirzepatide | Mounjaro, Zepbound | The specific brand’s monograph, prescribed product and insurance criteria. |
| Generic semaglutide | Different manufacturers and presentations | Authorization, current market status, any recall, prescribed substitution and pharmacy stock. |
This is a guide to common names, not a complete list of every GLP-1 medicine or a statement that every product is stocked everywhere. The Drug Product Database provides the product record and monograph. Ask the pharmacist to match the exact eight-digit DIN on the prescription and quote.
What changed with generic semaglutide?
Health Canada announced generic semaglutide authorizations during 2026, including Sevmia’s June 29 weight-management authorization. Authorization is not the same as commercial launch or local stock. Products with the same ingredient can have different labelled uses and presentations.
Our updated generic semaglutide verification guide records the specific October 30 product checks and the Dr. Reddy’s recall. Use it to organize questions, then confirm the exact product and current recall information with the dispensing pharmacy. Do not change a prescription or assume automatic substitution from an article.
Medication price versus the cost of care
As one dated example, Felix’s generic semaglutide page lists $149 for specified one-pen presentations. Its note identifies Ontario prices, after a Patient Support Program discount and before insurance, with a May 21, 2026 price-update date. That is not a guaranteed BC monthly bill. A pharmacy quote must specify the prescribed product, quantity, fees and refill period.
| Budget line | Information to collect | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| First assessment | Visit price, what it includes and whether an introductory discount ends. | The clinic’s current terms. |
| Medication and dispensing | DIN, prescribed quantity, medication price, markup and dispensing fee. | The dispensing pharmacy. |
| Renewals and follow-up | Visit, membership or monitoring fees and when they recur. | The treating service. |
| Forms and delivery | Any insurance-form fee, shipping or handling charges. | The clinic and pharmacy. |
| Coverage | Plan payment, deductible, limits and authorization conditions. | Your benefits administrator and processed pharmacy claim. |
Build a first-year budget in five steps
- Record the initial assessment fee and any payment due before eligibility is assessed.
- Ask the pharmacy how the prescribed quantity relates to your actual refill period.
- List follow-up, renewal, membership and other recurring charges with their frequency.
- Enter the coverage your own plan confirms, including deductibles and limits.
- Compare the first payment, a typical ongoing payment and the estimated full-year total.
Use the GLP-1 cost calculator with current written figures. A four-week price and a calendar-month price use different budgeting periods. If the proposed product or prescription changes, request a new quote instead of reusing the old total.
Keep two scenarios if coverage is still pending: the amount with confirmed benefits and the amount you would owe without them. This makes a low initial offer easier to judge without assuming an insurer will approve later. Ask what you owe if an assessment does not lead to a prescription.
Where to check GLP-1 coverage in BC, Ontario and Alberta
A Canadian drug authorization does not create one national insurance benefit. Your province, programme eligibility, exact DIN and reason for prescribing can change the answer. Start with the relevant official listing, then ask your pharmacist or benefits administrator to confirm your own claim.
| Location | Official starting point | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| British Columbia | PharmaCare formulary search | Is this exact DIN a benefit, does it require Special Authority, and which plan or deductible applies? |
| Ontario | Ontario Drug Benefit medication-coverage search | Am I eligible for the relevant drug programme, is the exact medicine listed, and are access criteria or approval required? |
| Alberta | Alberta Drug Benefit List and authorization guidance | Does my supplemental plan cover this product, is special authorization needed, and which charges remain? |
| Employer or private insurance | Your own plan’s drug lookup and benefits team | Are the prescribed indication, prior authorization, deductible and annual limit compatible with this claim? |
Ontario’s search links programme eligibility with individual drug listings. Alberta explains that its list supports government supplemental plans and that printed drug prices do not include every additional charge, such as dispensing fees. Neither resource is a personal pharmacy quotation or a prescribing guide.
Ask for a usable coverage answer
“Please check the exact DIN and quantity on my prescription. Is this use covered under my plan, is approval required before dispensing, and what would I pay for this fill including fees?” Record the response date and any approval still pending. Do not assume an answer for one brand, province or family member applies to another.
For BC-specific detail, continue to the Plan NP and Ozempic coverage guide. For product differences, use the Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro comparison; it serves a different purpose from this wider budget-and-access overview.
Insurance and BC PharmaCare
Check the exact drug and DIN in BC’s PharmaCare formulary search. An authorization to sell a drug is not a benefit decision. Where approval is needed, ask the prescriber about PharmaCare Special Authority and what current criteria apply.
A private insurer makes a separate decision under your particular plan. Ask whether the indication, prior authorization, annual limit, deductible or preferred-product rule affects your claim. Save the date and reference number of its answer. A clinic accepting insurance information is not confirmation of reimbursement.
BC’s Special Authority page also explains how to track a request through Health Gateway or your prescriber or pharmacist. It says coverage cannot be provided retroactively, so check whether approval is in place before purchasing a drug in expectation of that benefit.
Use the coverage preparation guide to organize questions. Share medical and insurance identifiers only through your provider’s or insurer’s appropriate secure process, not a public worksheet or newsletter signup.
Compare the service as well as the price
Before starting an online assessment, confirm that the service operates where you are located, who provides the assessment, which pharmacy supplies prescriptions, how follow-up works and how to contact the team about concerns. Check the fees if you are ineligible, cancel or transfer care.
You can start with your usual licensed care provider or review an appropriate consultation service. Felix’s current weight-management service information is one external option to compare, including its live fees and provincial eligibility. BCMedicalAccess does not select medicines, prescribe or guarantee approval through that link.
Avoid confusing a medicine with a “research” product
Health Canada warns about unauthorized and counterfeit GLP-1 products. Verify both the authorized finished product and the licensed pharmacy, rather than treating a familiar ingredient name, peptide label or social-media offer as proof. A practitioner and pharmacist should handle suitability, dosage, device and switching questions.
Take this checklist to your next conversation
- Exact product, DIN, quantity and pharmacy quote.
- Assessment and ongoing service fees.
- Refill period and follow-up arrangement.
- Coverage answer and any outstanding authorization.
- Cancellation, transfer and support contacts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest GLP-1 medication in Canada?
Compare the exact product your practitioner proposes, its prescribed quantity, pharmacy fees, ongoing clinic charges and your own coverage. An advertised starting price does not establish the cheapest suitable treatment for an individual.
Does generic approval mean a medicine is stocked or insured?
No. Authorization, marketed status, pharmacy supply and insurance coverage are separate checks. Confirm the exact DIN, current recall information and plan criteria with the pharmacy and benefits administrator.
Can an Ontario advertised price be used as a BC monthly budget?
No. Province, product, quantity, support-programme conditions, dispensing fees and refill period can differ. Obtain a current local pharmacy quote and include ongoing service charges.
Where do I check coverage in BC, Ontario or Alberta?
Start with the official PharmaCare formulary in BC, Ontario Drug Benefit medication search in Ontario, or Alberta Drug Benefit List and authorization guidance in Alberta. Programme eligibility and an individual drug listing are separate; ask the pharmacist to check your exact claim.
Turn the research into a useful conversation
- Compare Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro questions without treating the brands as interchangeable.
- Enter confirmed amounts in the free cost calculator and keep questions in the GLP-1 toolkit.
- Check generic-product and recall information, BC coverage and BC weight-management service information as appropriate.
