Updated September 29, 2026. This guide uses the official sources linked below. Drug benefits, plan rules and pharmacy pricing can change; confirm the exact product and claim result before payment.
Answer first: a prescription is not a coverage decision
B.C. PharmaCare, private insurance and self-pay are separate payment paths. A product can be authorized by Health Canada and prescribed by a clinician without being a current PharmaCare benefit for every indication. An insurer can also apply separate formulary, prior-authorization and plan-limit rules.
| Payment path | What the current information says | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| BC PharmaCare / Wegovy | B.C.'s January 2026 PharmaCare newsletter says Wegovy could not be listed after the manufacturer declined negotiations. | Check the current official benefit status and the pharmacy's live claim result. |
| Semaglutide Special Authority | The current semaglutide-for-diabetes Special Authority form sets criteria for its stated product and indication. | Do not treat a diabetes SA form as a Wegovy approval. Ask the prescriber and pharmacist about the exact current route. |
| Private insurance | Coverage is controlled by the member's contract and may depend on the product, DIN, indication, prior authorization, deductible and plan limit. | Ask for plan-specific confirmation before purchasing. |
| Self-pay | A pharmacy price is not a public or private coverage decision. | Request an itemized quote for the exact prescribed product, strength, package and dispensing fee. |
Questions for the pharmacist or insurer
- What exact product, strength, package and DIN are being dispensed?
- Is it a current PharmaCare benefit for this indication, and is any Special Authority route applicable?
- Can you adjudicate the claim before I pay, and what balance remains after my deductible or plan rules?
- Does my private plan require prior authorization, a particular DIN, a stated indication or proof of public-plan outcome?
- What documentation, invoice details or receipt does the insurer require?
Do not rely on an old DIN or a generic coverage claim
Do not copy a product identifier from an old article or assume a medication name settles coverage. Ask the dispensing pharmacist or insurer to confirm the DIN and package attached to the actual prescription. A prior authorization for one product, formulation or indication does not automatically apply to another.
How Special Authority fits in
Special Authority is a pre-approval process. B.C. explains that the prescriber normally submits the request when an eligible product and indication have an applicable route. Coverage begins when approval information is entered in PharmaNet and is not retroactive. The current semaglutide-for-diabetes form should be read for its own stated criteria; it is not a general pathway for chronic weight-management coverage.
Private plan and self-pay preparation
Before a private purchase, ask the insurer for the exact benefit decision and required evidence. Before self-pay, request a dated, itemized pharmacy quote. Keep any authorization reference, the prescription, itemized receipt and claim response. This is administrative preparation, not advice to begin, stop or change a medication.
