Understanding Private Diagnostics in BC
What "Private" Means
Private clinics in BC operate outside the MSP system for specific services. They cannot bill MSP for these services, meaning patients pay out-of-pocket or via private insurance.
Referrals Are Still Required
Even for private MRI or CT scans, you must have a referral from a licensed Canadian physician. This ensures the test is medically necessary and safe.
Legal Limitations
Private clinics cannot offer "medically necessary" services that are covered by MSP unless they are fully opted out. Emergency care is always public.
