Nanaimo Lung Function and Nerve Testing: Referral and Booking Guide

Find the Nanaimo referral steps for spirometry or a pulmonary function test at NRGH and a separate outpatient EMG or nerve conduction study.

Check the exact test on your order. Spirometry and full pulmonary function tests go through a respiratory lab. EMG and nerve conduction studies use a separate referral pathway. Confirm which office received your order before calling or travelling.

Spirometry and pulmonary function testing

  1. Ask your care provider to complete the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital requisition for the specific test. Island Health requires a referral.
  2. Confirm the referral was sent to the pulmonary function lab. The published booking line is 250-716-7705; it is not a walk-in blood-test booking.
  3. Confirm where to check in at 1200 Dufferin Crescent and ask the lab for test-specific preparation. Island Health lists the tests and location contacts.

Outpatient EMG and nerve conduction studies

  1. Ask your referring clinician which specialist should receive the order. Coastal Rehab & Neuro publishes a community/outpatient EMG referral for clinicians.
  2. For referrals sent there, confirm receipt and the appointment address with the office at 778-787-1707. Its published form lists Suite 502, 1515 Dufferin Crescent, a different address from the hospital.
  3. Do not use the hospital inpatient neurodiagnostics form to arrange outpatient EMG. If the order is for an EEG or another test, check the receiving department with the referring office.
