Answer first: the programs are separate
For B.C. seniors, the main official paths are MSP and BC PharmaCare, federal Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), and the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Each has separate eligibility, application, annual review and coverage rules. Do not assume one approval automatically creates another.
| Program | What to review | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| MSP / Fair PharmaCare | MSP enrolment, CRA income verification, family details and current coverage level | Check the official Health and Drug Coverage application and Fair PharmaCare account guidance |
| OAS / GIS | Automatic enrolment letter, tax filing, annual July decision correspondence and changes in household situation | Use Service Canada or My Service Canada Account |
| Canadian Dental Care Plan | Eligibility, renewal, provider participation, services and patient balance | Use the official Canada.ca application/renewal guidance before treatment |
Annual review checklist
- File the required federal tax return and make sure CRA information is current.
- Confirm Fair PharmaCare has verified income and review the new calendar-year coverage level.
- Update address, family composition and other relevant coverage information with the applicable program.
- Read OAS/GIS letters and report relevant income, marital-status, residency or living-arrangement changes to Service Canada.
- Before dental care, confirm CDCP eligibility, provider participation, covered service and any balance directly with the provider.
- Keep the official application, renewal and contact pages—not unsolicited messages—as the source of record.
Vision, Supplementary Benefits and care at home
| Need | What to check | Next question |
|---|---|---|
| Eye care | MSP describes annual routine eye examinations for people 65 and older, and medically required exams for other ages. | Is this visit an MSP benefit, and are glasses, imaging or optional tests separate? |
| Supplementary Benefits | This income-tested MSP program may provide a contribution toward eligible acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy, physiotherapy and non-surgical podiatry visits. | Am I eligible, is this provider enrolled, what is the per-visit contribution and what balance remains? |
| Home and community care | B.C. health authorities assess eligibility for subsidized home support, community nursing, rehabilitation, palliative and related services. | Which health-authority access point serves my address, and what assessment or referral is needed? |
Home and community care is assessed—not automatic—and fees can depend on income and service. Start through your regional health authority or HealthLinkBC and ask what support, assessment and wait information applies locally.
Documents that often matter
Depending on the program, gather Personal Health Numbers, adult Social Insurance Numbers, accepted identity/Canadian-status documents, CRA Notice of Assessment information and name-change documents where relevant. Use the program’s current page before submitting anything; do not send sensitive records to a third-party directory or email address that you have not independently verified.
