Dutasteride for Hair Loss in BC: Is It Better Than Finasteride?

Dutasteride is the more powerful cousin of finasteride. Both block DHT — the hormone that causes male pattern baldness — but dutasteride blocks more of it. Here's what BC men should know.

How Dutasteride Differs From Finasteride

Both medications inhibit 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. The difference is which type they block:

  • Finasteride: Blocks Type II 5-alpha reductase only
  • Dutasteride: Blocks both Type I and Type II 5-alpha reductase

The result: dutasteride reduces serum DHT by approximately 90–95%, compared to 70% for finasteride. More DHT suppression generally means more hair preservation.

Effectiveness Comparison

Clinical studies comparing the two show dutasteride produces:

  • Greater reduction in hair loss progression
  • More significant regrowth in men who respond to DHT blockers
  • Faster onset of action (some studies show results at 6 months vs 12 months for finasteride)

A 2019 meta-analysis found dutasteride 0.5mg produced statistically superior hair count increases compared to finasteride 1mg.

Cost in BC

Dutasteride is available as a generic in Canada:

  • Generic dutasteride 0.5mg: ~$50–$80/month at BC pharmacies
  • Via telehealth: ~$50–$70/month
  • Brand name Avodart: $100–$150/month (same molecule, higher cost)

Finasteride is cheaper: ~$40–$60/month generic. Dutasteride costs roughly 20–30% more.

Side Effects

Dutasteride has a similar side effect profile to finasteride, with some differences:

  • Sexual side effects (reduced libido, ED): similar rate to finasteride (~2–4%)
  • Longer half-life: Dutasteride stays in your system much longer (5-week half-life vs 6–8 hours for finasteride). This means side effects, if they occur, take longer to resolve after stopping
  • Not safe during pregnancy — women should not handle capsules

The longer half-life is the key practical difference. If you experience side effects on dutasteride, they won't resolve as quickly as with finasteride.

Is Dutasteride Right for You?

Consider dutasteride if:

  • You've tried finasteride for 12+ months with limited results
  • You want maximum DHT suppression
  • You're comfortable with the longer half-life and slower reversibility

Stick with finasteride if:

  • You're starting treatment for the first time (finasteride is the standard first-line)
  • You're concerned about side effects and want faster reversibility
  • Cost is a significant factor

How to Get Dutasteride in BC

Dutasteride is approved in Canada for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), not hair loss. It's prescribed off-label for hair loss. This means:

  • Your family doctor may or may not be comfortable prescribing it
  • Telehealth platforms that specialize in hair loss (like Felix) are often more willing to prescribe it off-label
  • A dermatologist or hair restoration specialist can prescribe it

The telehealth route is typically the fastest path.
