What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is a regulated health profession in BC focused on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, with an emphasis on the spine. Chiropractors are registered with the College of Chiropractors of BC (CCBC) and complete a 4-year Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree following undergraduate studies.

The primary treatment technique is spinal manipulation (also called "adjustment") — a controlled force applied to spinal joints to restore normal movement and reduce pain. Modern chiropractors also use soft tissue therapy, exercise prescription, and patient education.

What Conditions Does Chiropractic Treat?

Chiropractic has the strongest evidence for the following conditions:

  • Low back pain: Acute and chronic low back pain is the most common reason patients seek chiropractic care. Evidence supports short-term pain reduction comparable to physiotherapy and medication.
  • Neck pain: Cervicogenic headaches and neck pain from postural strain or whiplash respond well to chiropractic manipulation and mobilization.
  • Headaches: Tension-type headaches and cervicogenic headaches (originating from the neck) can be effectively treated with cervical manipulation.
  • Shoulder and hip pain: Many chiropractors treat extremity joints in addition to the spine.

Chiropractic is not appropriate for fractures, infections, inflammatory arthritis in active flare, or conditions requiring medical management. A good chiropractor will refer you to the appropriate provider when chiropractic is not indicated.

Chiropractic vs. Physiotherapy: Which Is Right for You?

Both professions treat musculoskeletal conditions, and there is significant overlap in their scope of practice. Key differences:

  • Physiotherapy has a broader scope, including neurological rehabilitation, post-surgical care, pelvic floor, and vestibular conditions. Physiotherapists typically provide more exercise-based rehabilitation.
  • Chiropractic places greater emphasis on spinal manipulation and joint-focused treatment. For acute low back pain, many patients find faster initial relief with chiropractic.

For most musculoskeletal conditions, either profession can be effective. The quality of the individual practitioner matters more than the professional designation.

What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Your first visit will include a detailed history, physical examination (including posture, range of motion, and neurological testing), and a treatment plan discussion. The chiropractor will explain their findings and proposed treatment, including the expected number of sessions and goals.

Treatment typically involves spinal manipulation (the "crack" sound is gas releasing from the joint — it is not bones breaking), soft tissue work, and stretching. Sessions last 20–45 minutes.

Chiropractic Costs in BC

Chiropractic is not covered by MSP for most BC residents. Typical costs:

  • Initial consultation and treatment: $100–$180
  • Follow-up treatment: $70–$120 per session

Most extended health benefit plans cover chiropractic at $30–$60 per visit with an annual maximum of $500–$1,000. ICBC covers chiropractic for motor vehicle accident injuries.
